Patient Information

Surgical Assistant Services Patient Notice

Information for patients regarding Surgical Assistant services that may be provided in connection with your surgical procedure.

Why Am I Receiving This Notice?

Your surgeon may determine that a qualified Surgical Assistant is necessary to participate in your surgical procedure.

Surgical Assistant services may be provided by a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C), Physician Assistant (PA-C), or other appropriately credentialed healthcare professional.

The Surgical Assistant works directly with your surgeon before, during, and after surgery to help facilitate a safe and efficient procedure.

What Does a Surgical Assistant Do?

A Surgical Assistant is an active member of the surgical team.

Depending upon the procedure, the Surgical Assistant may assist with:

  • Exposure and visualization of the surgical site
  • Tissue retraction and handling
  • Control of bleeding (hemostasis)
  • Instrumentation and equipment management
  • Implant positioning and placement
  • Wound closure and suturing
  • Other duties delegated by the operating surgeon

The decision to utilize a Surgical Assistant is made solely by your surgeon based upon the complexity and requirements of your procedure.

Independent Professional Services

Surgical Assistant services may be provided through Precision Surgical Resources or an affiliated Surgical Assistant practice.

These services may be separate from services provided by:

  • The hospital
  • The surgery center
  • The surgeon
  • The anesthesia provider
  • The pathology provider
  • The radiology provider

Insurance and Billing Information

Surgical Assistant services may be billed separately from other healthcare services associated with your procedure.

Coverage and reimbursement vary among insurance carriers and benefit plans.

You may receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurance company regarding Surgical Assistant services.

Questions regarding insurance processing, billing, or patient responsibility should be directed to Precision Surgical Resources.
